I admit the niceties of narrative technique you discuss here go straight over my head. I think the story works OK for what it is, but it failed to make a big impact on me. It reminded me a bit of Poe, delving into the dark, perverse side of human nature. However, unlike in Poe's stories, there is no true resolution, no dramatic reveal.

Perhaps if the characters had been more fleshed out, something not possible in so few words, the story would have intrigued me more. Trevor is quite good at portraying nasty character like Williams. He just isn't as good at writing mysteries. If there had been a plot twist or a surprise somewhere, the story could have worked better. I just felt it wasn't that impactful.
